Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

While there’s no doubt it’s getting hotter on Earth, surely hell is freezing over. George Bush the second did something very good. By declaring a chain of the Hawaiian islands a national monument, commercial fishing can be banned in the area within 5 years.

Austin, Texas ranked #14 in SustainLane 2006 US City Rankings

According to the 2006 SustainLane U.S. City Rankings, Austin, Texas ranks 14th in sustainability among U.S. cities. Why didn’t Austin rank higher? Cars. Austin has limited public transportation and people choose to drive in higher proportions to cities with higher ratings, like Portland.

Canadians get polluted

A news story in the Toronto Star led me to a PDF report. According to the Toronto Star article, the study found a number of carcinogens, hormone disrupters, neurotoxins, and reproductive/developmental toxins, including banned substances, in blood and urine samples taken from five Canadian families.

In the U.S.A., the EPA puts out a human adipose tissue survey which inventories toxic chemicals found in adipose tissue.
